about the past 2010 Regatta:

Galatea, Old Bob, win class in Classic Regatta

(By Robert Luckock)

The sleek 70ft Sloop “Galatea” with age and beauty in her favor led the Antiguan charge at the close of the 5th St. Maarten/St. Martin Classic Regatta on Sunday with the overall win in Vintage Class while compatriots on the Gaff Ketch “Old Bob” steered her to a win in the Classic Class. Both boats took first place on corrected time on all three days.
Judd Tinius’s 111-year- old “Galatea” stole the limelight from Allard Stamm’s diminutive eye-catching Cornwall crabber “Magnolia” who was celebrating her 100th birthday.
“Galatea” defied grand old age with an assured performance while “Magnolia” had the misfortune to drop out of Saturday’s race after getting caught in a hole.
They drifted dangerously close to rocks and had to use the engine to get out of trouble.
They elected not to start the race on Sunday but remained in second place.
“We’ve had a lot of fun,” said Tinius at the prize giving in the Holland House Hotel. “This is a smaller regatta than Antigua’s Classic, so a little more relaxing, less hard core.
A bit tough for us too because a few boats dropped out.
We were miles in front all alone but still had to keep the pressure on.
But we will certainly be back next year.”

Peter Bakker’s 1911 Gaff Schooner “Passaat”, second in Classic Class, had some sail problems on the first day but really needed a lot more wind than there was to get her going.
The newly introduced "Spirit of Classic" Class was won by the old Swan “Coscoroba” owned by Jacq Maan and second place went to Tom Batty’s 1975 Sparkman and Stephen’s IW31 “Madonna”.

The additional Old Stars class raced on Saturday and Sunday only and was won by Eddie Johnson’s 1985 Sloop “Boon” ahead of Mike Stamm’s 30ft Albergh “Swaentje.”

Friday saw the fleet sailing at a brisk but gentlemanly pace to Marigot before the return leg to Great Bay on Saturday followed by a last race from Great Bay to Simpson Bay and back on Sunday.
Race Director Rien Korteknie organised shorter courses as possible so boats could get the maximum out of the very light breeze available on Saturday and Sunday.
Race Officer was Alfred Koolen.
“All the starts were on time, there were no problems, and fortunately we had just enough of a breeze to keep the boats going throughout the whole weekend,” said Korteknie.
Judge David de Vries was not called upon to settle any protests.

The Best Dressed Crew Prize went to “Magnolia” and the Perseverance Prize to “Old Bob”.
Most Photogenic Prize was awarded to “Galatea.”

“Magnolia’s” Allard Stamm received a special honorary membership to the St. Maarten/Classic Yacht Club In recognition of the boat’s 100th birthday
